Are there any risks of Laser eye Surgery?
Negative side effects or complications are extremely rare during or after LASIK eye surgery. In fact, serious side effects occur in only 1 to 5% of all LASIK patients and are predominately mild. Still, as with any surgical procedure complications do occasionally occur, and people considering this operation should be aware of these risks.
Of course they should also be aware that the possibility of these risks occurring is greatly reduced by a proper screening. As mentioned elsewhere, certain conditions can predispose a LASIK patient to these complications; ignoring these increased risks puts the patient in far greater danger of experiencing serious side effects.
So what are some of the common side effects of LASIK eye surgery?
Dry Eyes. While doctors know that certain medications contribute to this condition, there appear to be other LASIK-related factors that can trigger dry eyes in a patient post-op. While medicated eye drops can treat mild and/or temporary cases of dry eyes, some patients will experience dry eyes long-term. Apart from being uncomfortable, this condition is dangerous to LASIK patients because of how it compromises the eyes during the healing process. If you experience dry eyes for more than a couple days after your LASIK surgery, then contact your doctor immediately.
Inflammation. Inflammation is another side effect that is fairly common. Thankfully, it is also usually short-lived. This side effect often resolves itself though it can also be treated with medicated eye drops. If irritation and inflammation persists, call your doctor as prolonged inflammation could be a symptom of a greater problem.
Infection. The heightened sensitivity of your eyes puts them at greater risk of developing an infection. Following your doctor's advice during recovery is a great way to ward off infection, and the antibiotics they prescribe protect the majority of patients from this condition. If you suspect your eye has become infected, contact your doctor immediately. Untreated infections can lead to scarring or permanent impairment of your vision.
Flap Wrinkles. After your LASIK surgery, your doctor will replace the corneal flap over your eye. Normally, the flap stays in place thanks to a natural adhesive, but occasionally irritation will cause the flap to move before it heals. When this happens, the patient may feel discomfort and have blurred vision. Thankfully, flap wrinkles are very rare but also highly treatable. A quick visit to your surgeon can usually have this side effect resolved in a matter of minutes.
Over and Undercorrection. LASIK surgery will never be an exact science because every patient's eyes vary. While choosing an experienced and qualified surgeon can reduce your risk of leaving a LASIK procedure with over or undercorrection, these conditions still occur. Over and undercorrection essentially create a new aberration in your eye, forcing the patient to undergo additional operations or to continue wearing corrective lenses.
